CCAP Lightning Emergency Response Plan

The CCAP shall adhere to the following Lightning Emergency Response Plan in the event of the threat of severe weather leading up to or during any CCAP-promoted event.

If, at any time leading up to or during an event, thunder is heard, lightning is seen, or the CCAP otherwise determines weather conditions to be unsafe due to threat of severe weather, the event and all related activities (e.g., registration) will be placed on hold for at least 30 minutes. All athletes, spectators, and staff will be instructed to find shelter immediately and remain sheltered until contacted via email. Riders who do not have access to immediately available shelter (e.g., a fully enclosed vehicle) should seek out the closest shelter. Any participant refusing to adhere to the CCAP’s guidance shall do so at their own risk/peril.  Failure to follow the CCAP’s requests to vacate the event and seek shelter may result in an individual’s ban from future CCAP events.

Once activity has been suspended, activity will not resume for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard or flash of lightning is witnessed.

If conditions improve (more than 30 minutes without thunder, visible lightning, or heavy cloud cover), the CCAP staff will send a notification to all registered participants via Bikereg email with instructions on resumption of activities. If it becomes safe to resume an event, athletes wishing to participate should return to the staging area and resume activity within ten minutes of CCAP staff announcing this determination.  Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture of any entry fees.

Any subsequent thunder or lightning after the beginning of the 30-minute count will reset the clock and another 30-minute count will begin.

Please note that this policy on resumption of delayed or suspended events due to lightning risk will be in effect until 90 minutes before sunset (if an evening event) or 90 minutes prior to the final scheduled category or event on the published event schedule.  Resumption of a delayed or suspended event may impact the order and length of any and all remaining races, and categories will be combined or canceled outright at the discretion of CCAP staff in order to ensure safety. If threatening weather conditions persist beyond the 90 minute marker, the event will not resume, and all remaining races will be canceled.
